Why Should We Clean Up Our Cities?
In Canada, the Great Lakes support some of the most valuable freshwater fisheries in the world, according to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC). Lake Ontario is home to numerous species, including Chinook, Coho, and Atlantic Salmon, Rainbow, Brown, and Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Walleye, Muskie, Channel Catfish, and Common Carp.
Failing to protect the Great Lakes from garbage and pollutants disrupts ecosystems, causing imbalances in food webs and reducing biodiversity resilience. A variety of microorganisms, fish, and bird species rely on Lake Ontario and the other Great Lakes as their habitat.
Take a look at this example of a food web within Lake Ontario to understand how interconnected species are within the environments around us.

We must take responsible action to clean these environments and educate the public, removing harmful waste to protect species and preserve our beautiful green spaces, especially in large cities like Toronto, where green spaces are limited.
